While Presidents’ Day traditionally is a day to celebrate our American President, honoring the birthdays of Washington, Lincoln, and other figures, it’s also a big weekend for retail.

Many retailers and brands take advantage of the holiday to release special promotions during Presidents’ Day weekend. In a review of promotional and advertising activity ahead of President’s Day 2017, we found that three main consumer categories are the focus of President’s Day sale events – furniture, automotive, and large appliances. Not only do larger department stores, such as Macy’s and Sears, offer promotions on furniture and major appliances, but specialty stores such as Value City Furniture, Wolf Furniture, and Ashley Homestore also want to stand out during the weekend. Automotive brands such as Jeep and Kia advertised Presidents’ Day sales as well. See below for some examples.

Any holiday throughout the year gives retailers and brands cause for running a sale event. While toys, games, and electronics may be more popular for a Black Friday event – Presidents’ Day has found its niche as a weekend for major appliances, automotive, and furniture sales.
