The Super Bowl kicks off this Sunday between the New England Patriots and the Philadelphia Eagles, but there’s another showdown happening alongside the big game – Coke vs. Pepsi. This long-standing rivalry of soda brands will come to the forefront of the American consciousness this weekend, even though both brands’ ads have already been released online. And even though they’d probably never admit it, Variety reports that the two sodas are sharing a strikingly similar message in their commercials.
In the Pepsi spot, Jimmy Fallon narrates the soda’s iconic presence in pop culture through the years. The ad has no shortage of celebrity appearances, including Britney Spears, Michael J. Fox, and Michael Jackson. They make sure to highlight the full Pepsi portfolio (Pepsi, Pepsi Zero Sugar, and Diet Pepsi) while reminding viewers that the beverage celebrates every generation. The 30-second ad is set to run just before the Pepsi-sponsored halftime show, which will also serve to reinforce their ongoing celebrity alliances.
In the fourth quarter it’s Coke’s turn, with a 60-second commercial of their own. And in what I’m sure is a complete coincidence, they’ve also made the decision to highlight three versions of their product (Coca Cola, Coke Zero Sugar and Coca-Cola Life). The key message, “There’s a different Coke for all of us, Enjoy Yours” is delivered while showing people from all walks of life enjoying the different variations of Coke. It draws a parallel between their beverage selection and the celebration of our differences. Personally, I think it’s well done. It may not be as hip as the Pepsi spot, but its overall aesthetic comes across as a little less superficial. That being said, they’re still selling sugar water.
